These two photos are of a machine carved post cap with integrated rail stubs. This design allows the installer to run his curved and straight railings into the post caps using straight cuts. The alternative would be to a more common method of mitering railing into the edges of the post cap. This is not only significantly more work but also creates a joint that tends to break down over time.
